Friends of Sutton Park
The Friends of Sutton Park Association (FOSPA) was founded in 1950 after it was suggested that parts of Sutton Park could be built upon. They are one of the members of the Sutton Park Advisory Committee, a formal committee which meets regularly to oversee the management and use of the park and which forms a link between various community and conservation organisations and the City Council who manage the park. The association protects and conserves the natural resources of the park, promoting awareness of it to the public. Since being made a National Nature Reserve in 1997, the future for Sutton Park has never been safer. FOSPA, now affiliated to the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, concentrates its resources on funding voluntary conservation projects in Sutton Park. The FOSPA Conservation Team meets fortnightly to work on a variety of practical conservation. Tasks include the ancient woodland art of coppicing, creating boardwalks to give access to the wetlands, bird ringing, building specially designed habitats for the park's dragonfly population and building silt traps to protect the park's pools. Anybody wishing to join the FOSPA Conservation Team on any of its tasks will be made welcome and new volunteers are keenly encouraged. Training and support will be given where necessary. All work carried out by the team is administered in conjunction with the Sutton Park Ranger Service and is in keeping with management plans drawn up for the park by English Nature. As well as the practical conservation projects, FOSPA also organises a full programme of events including free guided walks in Sutton Park along with a wide variety of social events. Conservation volunteers do not have to be a member of FOSPA. Social events are also open to non-members. However, those wishing to become a FOSPA member can do so for an annual subscription of . Friends of Walkers Heath Park
Walkers Heath Park situated in South Birmingham is 51 acres bordering Druids Heath, Kings Norton and Wythall. It is vast and green and you may forget you are in an urban park when you are there! The Chinn Brook runs alongside the park and there is a medium-sized wetland area - yet to be brought back to its former glory! Yet to be fully explored, the wildlife constitutes foxes, bats, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, swallow hawks and ... lots of dogs! The park has a basketball court, netball court and a tennis court with permanent tennis net as well as two sets of football goals. There's also a concrete table-tennis table. The park has a wooden throne, an imagination wood, an area being cultivated as a woodland (a former miniature golf course) and a community orchard. There are also a trail of wooden birds/animals living in trees - there's an owl, a woodpecker, a sloth and a snake. See if you can find them all!
