ASPIRE2
Aspire2 aims to provide empowering and enriching opportunities for families and children living in South Reading. Aspire2 was established by Whitley schools and their governors with the purpose of providing children and families living in South Reading (an area of high social and economic deprivation) access to activities and opportunities that they would not otherwise have experienced. This inculdes arranging family day trips to the seaside, theatre etc. as well as running residential trips for the children. Why the community needs this charity: Although Reading is an affluent town, parts of Whitley and Church wards in South Reading are within the 5% most deprived areas for education, skills and training in England. With the government encouraging the 'Big Society' we are working closely with our community to ensure that our children continue to get the very best opportunities in life. We do this through raising the understanding of healthy lifestyles, diet and the importance of education. Outcomes: We have shown that over the past 5 years, pupil attainment has improved, we are developing literacy and numeracy skills, so that they have better life opportunities. Children and their families want to participate in enrichment activities, in 2010 over 975 places were filled on summer day and residential acitivities alone. Collaboration between schools continues to grow, and we are linking more effectively with other community groups.
